A lot of people wait with baited breath for the next installment of a sci fi series. However, I like nothing more than to find an already completed series and read them all in a row. First started the practice when I purchased Peter Hamiltons Judas Unchained and realized there was a prequel. Hung on to it until I had both and it was worth the wait: fabulous. Did it again with Clarke and Baxter’s Time Oddysey series. I know most books in a series try to fill you in on what happened in the first book just in case you didn’t read it, but everything just makes more sense and there is far more continuity if read in sequence. A lot of hard sci fi is so detail orientated that you really can miss out on a lot. George R. Martin’s Game of Thrones fantasy series comes out every year or two, but I almost feel like rereading the prior book before starting the new one just so I can get everything out of it. I honestly don’t remember some of the lesser characters who I had read in a previous installment Peter Hamilton has done 2 out of 3 books in his new Void series, and really liking his stuff, but the third one doesn’t come out till 2010 so I am just going to have to wait. And then I buy them all!!!

    Hiya,

have to agree TOTALLY with charlesancker - I don’t have the patience to wait for a new installments in a book series if it is a new series. If I find a series by an author I like, I wait until I have tracked them all down before I start - it took me 6 months to find book 3 of the Amtrak Wars series, and I couldn’t start reading it until I had them all. Also I read 2-3 books a week, if I read a new book, I am not going to remember the fine details of the story 12 months later when the next book in the series comes out.

Have to say I am liking Alastair Reynolds as even though most of his stuff is set with recurring characters in the same universe, they are not a “series”, and so can be read in any order and still enjoyed.

Is it just me that wonders whether publishers will ever let authors write just 1 book these days? A well-written story contained within 1 volume?
Much of my sci-fi collection is just that, single novels. What ever happened to that?

OH well, as someone who has just found the site, thanks for reading!

    cheers,
    Slartibartfast
